From June 29 to July 5, 26 instances of chain-pulling were reported across 18 trains, and from July 6 to 15, the number rose to 52 incidents across 51 trains. Statistics reveal a substantial surge in chain-pulling cases from April to June 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. The RPF has apprehended over 6200 individuals for unwarranted chain-pulling and imposed fines. Chain-pulling often disrupts train schedules, inconveniencing passengers. The act is punishable under the Railway Act 1989 with a fine of Rs. 1000 or imprisonment for up to a year or both. Chain-pulling is considered valid only in emergency situations like a child left behind, an elderly or disabled person missing the train, a sudden medical emergency, fire, or theft/robbery.
